Student Experience: Alex

3rd Year, Musical Theatre

I started at The MGA Academy of Performing Arts as a musical theatre student when I was only 15.

I remember noticing the friendly, family-like atmosphere as soon as I walked into the building and was made to feel welcome straight away by the current students. Luckily for me they all had personalities as big as mine and wicked senses of humour too – must when you’re expected to work so hard during classes.

I felt involved and at home immediately. The energy and enthusiasm of the students and staff rubbed off on me from the moment I started.

I can remember my first ever tap class. I have to admit that it is hilarious to think back on it now – trying so hard to shuffle I tripped over my own feet! I knew I was a million miles away from the abilities of the dance students at MGA but this didn’t bother me at all. My tutors and peers encouraged me to work hard at dance and much to my shock I did start to improve. I can now shuffle extremely well, even if I say so myself. It’s a great extra skill to add to my acting and singing and will hopefully help me secure a bigger variety of work when I graduate!

I’m now in my final year of my full-time Diploma in Musical Theatre and about to start auditioning for professional work. The past two years have been a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences ranging from a great social life with my incredible fellow students, the discipline of the training in the studios here at MGA, learning an indescribable amount of skills in my acting, singing and dance classes, and even learning to cartwheel with expert precision in gymnastics (after many traumatic falls).

I couldn’t ask for better facilities, studios or access to research and learning resources and I couldn’t ask for more extra-curricular opportunities to supplement our training. As I now go off into the ‘big bad world’ I know I’ve learnt more than enough at MGA to give me the courage to excel at what I do.

Two of my favorite memories from my time at MGA are playing Carmen in The Producers and laughing more than I have ever laughed in my life; and being a member of The MGA Singers and performing at venues across the country and feeling extremely proud to be part of such a prestigious choir.

I’ve had some of the best times of my life at MGA and will always remember them. I can’t imagine my life without MGA. If you are reading this and considering applying – I won’t be there when you start is September as I’ll be off making my mark on the professional industry, but mark my words, I’ll be visiting! – say hi to me if we bump into each other and I’ll try not to be too much of a pain in the derriere (learnt that in ballet, French for bum by the way!).
